Ossett United appoint new manager

James Walshaw has been unveiled as Ossett United's new manager.

Walshaw is a former player at the club and briefly held the position of joint-caretaker manager following the departure of Wayne Benn back in December 2021.

He has enjoyed a non-league career spanning more than 20 years, having represented the likes of Scarborough Athletic, Altrincham, Guiseley and more recently Emley, who he helped to promotion from the NCEL last season.

Walshaw replaces Dave Wild, who stepped down earlier this month after a difficult run which left the club rooted to the foot of the NPL East Division table after just one win from their opening 12 games.

The club's difficult run continued as they lost 1-0 at home to Stocksbridge Park Steels in the league before being heavily beaten 4-0 by Warrington Rylands in the first round of the FA Trophy over the weekend.

They have now lost five matches in a row, scoring just once during that time, and sit eight points from safety.

“After two successful decades in non-league as a player, I’m delighted to be appointed as manager of Ossett United," he said.

"I’ve always felt a strong connection to this club, and stepping into this role is an honour.

"I know the passion of our supporters and the dedication of the board. The fans and people of Ossett are incredible and deserve a team that matches their commitment and energy.

"I’m eager to get started and get to work. There’s plenty to build on, and I’m ready for the challenge ahead.”

Ryan Qualter, who has acted in an interim capacity since Wild's departure, will remain as part of Walshaw's backroom team.

Ossett's new manager will take charge for the first time when they host Glasshoughton Welfare in the West Riding County Cup on Tuesday night, before attention returns to league matters and a trip to fellow strugglers Sheffield on Saturday.
