Ste Daley remaining positive despite Prescot Cables' slow start

Prescot Cables manager Ste Daley admits that his side were outworked in their most recent defeat at home to Workington, but knows there’s a lot more to come from his side this season.

The Pesky Bulls were beaten 2-0 at home on August 20 - a defeat that saw Daley’s side drop to 21st in the Northern Premier League, picking up just one point in four games.

The Cables boss was disappointed at the result, but credited the work rate of their most recent opponents.

Speaking after the game, he said: “I was impressed with them [Workington]. They were very good, very organised and hard-working.

“We had a 20-minute spell where we controlled the game. They scored a really good goal and then we just couldn’t get back into it.

“They are a very good team and their fitness showed towards the end of the game.”

Prescot were victims of a tumultuous pre-season, and at one point it seemed that Daley was not going to be in the dugout at all this season, after he briefly left and was replaced by Dave Dempsey.

Given the complications during the off-season, Cables didn’t participate in as many pre-season friendlies as their fellow NPL sides.

“Fitness-wise, we’re not where we need to be," Daley admitted.

"Pre-season hasn’t been great for us, but the lads know where we’re at and what we need to do. Sometimes you have to tip your cap to a side who have come and outworked you.”

Prescot travel to Mickleover on August 24 before facing last season’s play-off semi-finalists Warrington Rylands on Bank Holiday Monday.

Rylands haven’t started the season brightly either though, as they sit just one place above Daley’s side on the same number of points.

“The games on Saturday and Monday will be tough, but we’re looking forward to them," the Cables boss said.

“We’ll get back training on Thursday and go again for the weekend.”
