Hebburn Town captain Amar Purewal is ready for club’s first season in Step 3
Hebburn Town striker Amar Purewal feels his side need to keep belief and stay positive ahead of the Hornets’ first season at Step 3.
After the 2022/23 season ended in a play-off semi-final defeat, Daniel Moore’s side won the NPL East Division last season.
Purewal, in his first season as permanent club captain, led the line with 30 league goals, the most in the division, which earned him a place in the team of the season and the honour of being the division’s player of the season.
The upcoming campaign sees Hebburn compete in the NPL for the first time in their history, a competition that Purewal has been promoted out of with Darlington in 2015/16.
On how he intends to lead the side, the 34-year-old said: “the same way as last season, by example.
“By training the best I can and leading with good performances and sacrifices I make with my game for the greater good of the team.”
Since arriving at Hebburn in 2020, Purewal has been involved in plenty of successes for the Hornets, including their FA Vase win in 2021, alongside a JR Cleator Cup win in the same year and a Durham Challenge Cup win in 2022/23.
This year will see them face off against a higher level of competition, but the Hebburn captain believes that the new challenge should not put his teammates off competing.
“Belief is a huge part of moving up. There will be games we win and games we lose, but we must not get too high or too low.
“Just need to move on regardless of the result, and be positive.
“The team goal is to win the next game and nothing more than that. We also want to go as far as we can in each cup and the way we’ll achieve this is through hard work and preparing in every training session.”
The Panjab international’s ultimate goal this season though is to lead his side and “contribute as much as possible.”
