David Fish delighted with comeback win as Mossley progress in FA Cup
Mossley manager David Fish expressed pride as his Mossley side battled from two-down to defeat NPL Premier Division side Whitby Town in their FA Cup first qualifying round replay.
The NPL West Division side were 2-0 down at half-time thanks to a brace from Stephen Walker, who added to his two FA Cup goals from the initial 2-2 draw at Steel Park on Saturday.
However, Bailey Marsden’s first goal since returning from his year-long injury lay-off with 12 minutes remaining set up a grand finale, and the Lilywhites sent the game to extra time through a Mateusz Kardacz equaliser in the fifth minute of added time.
“I thought we were in the game at half-time,” Fish said.
“I thought we had the better chances from open play, and the two goals we conceded came from errors from us.
“[At half-time] we reinforced positives and focussed on how hard we were working. 2-0 is a precarious score and we knew how important the next goal was. We came out on the front foot and we were aggressive.”
Fish’s side led in extra time too, but a late penalty from Walker secured his hat-trick and sent the game to penalties.
Two saves from Finley Madigan in the shootout secured a 4-3 penalty win, and a home tie against National League North side Chorley in the second qualifying round.
On the dramatic shootout win, Fish said: “I thought we took our penalties really well. We didn’t give their keeper much hope.
“I think it’s deserved over the course of the two games. Over the balance of play I think we edged it.”
Mossley are back in league action before the next game in the FA Cup, as they host Hednesford Town on September 10.
