Worksop Town bring in ex-Spurs goalkeeper
Barnsley goalkeeper Adam Hayton has joined Worksop Town on a short-term loan deal.
Hailing from Luton, Hayton came through the ranks at Tottenham Hotspur, joining them as an eight-year-old.
He penned a pro contract with Spurs in 2022, and having featured in the UEFA Youth League, Hayton impressed enough to be training with the first team.
However, in January 2023, Hayton headed north to join Barnsley on a permanent basis, making his professional debut during the Reds' Papa John’s Trophy campaign.
The 19-year-old arrives at the Windsor Foodservice Stadium on a short-term loan after regular goalkeeper Sebastian Malkowski picked up a long-term injury at the end of last season.
Manager Craig Parry said: “I think with Adam, it’s not just a knee-jerk reaction. We have been monitoring him since last year and with the situation that happened at the end of the season with Seb, we unfortunately couldn't get him in then – he was the number one choice to bring him in, but the rules and regulations couldn’t facilitate that.
“You just have to look at his pedigree: a professional footballer at Tottenham and he was offered a new deal and he turned it down to go to Barnsley to get into the system quickly.
"When someone trains with the first team at Tottenham as he has done at his age, you know that the quality is there.
“We, as a management team, tried to be ahead of the game in case anything happened with Seb, we had Plan A, B, and C and he is Plan A and we’re very lucky to have him.
“It works both ways - he gets experience with us of men’s football, and the same token is we get an exceptional young goalkeeper with a fantastic future ahead of him.”
