Carlton Town announce death of club president

Carlton Town have announced the death of their long-standing club president Roger Smith.

The news came through at Emley, where the Millers were playing, just 15 minutes before Saturday's kick-off in the NPL East Division.

Having spent several months in hospital earlier this year, Smith was welcomed back to Stoke Lane in September and looked to have been on the mend.

However, the club say he was rushed into hospital and tragically passed away on Saturday afternoon.

Club chairman Mick Garton, who worked alongside Smith for over 20 years, said: “We are all obviously devastated, and no words can explain what his family must be going through.

"This was not expected and has knocked everyone who knew him for six.

“I have seen all the kind words on social media, and on behalf of the club, I wish to thank everyone for those kind messages and thoughts.”

Speaking after Saturday's 4-0 defeat at Emley, Millers joint-manager Tommy Brookbanks paid tribute to Smith, saying: “The club are devastated to hear that Roger Smith passed away earlier today.

“He is a huge loss for Carlton, but most importantly Viv, Laura and his family.”
