NPL Round-Up | Monday 26 August

The early pace-setters went head to head to headline Bank Holiday Monday in the Northern Premier League’s Premier Division, as Hyde United travelled to Macclesfield.

There was nothing to separate either side, as John Rooney cancelled out Jack Redshaw’s sixth of the season, six minutes after the away side took the lead.

Both sides remain unbeaten, picking up 14 points from their opening six games, with the Tigers remaining top on goal difference.

Macclesfield fell to third however, as Ashton United’s away win at FC United of Manchester saw the Robins shoot up to second.

In a game that saw all the goals come in the first half, Dan Cowan’s goal just past the half hour mark was enough to secure a 2-1 win at Broadhurst Park.

Worksop Town continued their fine early-season form as they comfortably defeated Gainsborough Trinity 2-0 at The Northolme.

Goals from Jordan Burrow and Aleksandr Starcenko either side of the half fired Worksop up to fourth. A fourth clean sheet of the season also means that Craig Parry’s side have both the best attack and best defence in the division so far.

Towards the foot of the table, Matlock Town were unable to hold onto their early lead as Leek Town came from behind to win 2-1 at The Proctor Cars Stadium.

Leek had taken the lead in each of their last three games and failed to win, but this time it was Josh Berhaut’s side who administered a second half comeback to win 2-1 after Joe West had the Gladiators in front at half time.

Blyth Spartans remain the only other side yet to win a game in the league this season, after they were defeated 4-1 at home by Morpeth Town.

Four goals without reply from Nathan Buddle, Nic Bollado and a Jack Foalle double condemned Blyth to a third defeat of the season. Zack Simpson’s goal in second-half added time proved a mere consolation.

Prescot Cables picked up their first win of the season away at Warrington Rylands.

John Murphy’s goal on the hour saw Cables leapfrog Rylands in the table into 19th.

Stockton Town returned to winning ways after two straight defeats thanks to two second half goals without reply against Whitby Town, who went pointless across the weekend.

Hebburn Town lost their first game of the season as they conceded two goals in the final ten minutes away at Workington.

Bailey Adamson had the away side ahead in the first half, but Jamie Allen’s equaliser on 79 minutes and Ben McCarron’s winner four minutes later gave the hosts their second win of the season, moving them up to 10th.

Guiseley completed an incredible comeback away at Bamber Bridge, picking up all three points after falling two-goals down inside the opening 20 minutes.

Leo Farrell pulled one back immediately after Simon Grand doubled Brig’s lead, and goals from Jameel Ible and Will Longbottom’s 90th minute free-kick gave Guiseley their second 3-2 win in three days.

Thomas Cursons was on the scoresheet again for Ilkeston Town, but his sixth of the season wasn’t enough to take the points at Basford United, who ran out 2-1 winners.

And Lancaster City remain unbeaten in the league, but picked up their fifth draw in six games as their clash with Mickleover finished goalless.
