Workington favourite returns to club

Defender Matty Clarke has returned to Workington for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.

Clarke, 25, enjoyed four seasons at the Reds between 2019 and 2023, making 130 appearances under then-manager Danny Grainger.

The former Kendal, Penrith and Bradford (Park Avenue), who departed Borough Park in June last year to link up with Mark Fell at Lancaster, before making the switch to Clitheroe in February 2024.

He featured 21 times in all competitions for the Blues, but now makes the move back to Cumbria to be reunited with Fell once more.

On the signing, Mark Fell said: "[Clarke] is a good player, he's a great character to have around as well.

"He's got good experience at this level - I had him at Lancaster prior to this, I actually took him from Workington to Lancaster, so I know what he is all about.

"One of the key things for us is his flexibility. He can play in numerous positions at right-back, left-back, right or left wing-back or even as a winger.

"At the moment, we certainly need someone with flexibility like that, but we need flexibility with good footballers, and that's what Clarkey is.

"He will give us something that we haven't got at the moment in terms of his ability to defend in the wide areas, he'll give us some real athleticism because that's what he's all about - he covers lots of ground and he's a clever footballer.

"It was a no-brainer for me when we got the opportunity to bring him back, and it's a pleasure to have him back.

“He'll go straight into the squad for Saturday away at Gainsborough Trinity and he'll be a welcome addition.”
