Wheatley makes permament Whitby switch

Whitby Town have signed midfielder Josef Wheatley, subject to FA approval.

The 26-year-old joins the Seasiders from Spennymoor Town and has penned a permanent deal after spending almost two months on loan at the Turnbull Ground during the 2022/23 season.

He scored his first goal for the club in a 4-1 victory over Matlock Town in March.

Born in Middlesbrough, Wheatley spent time on Boro's books, progressing through the U18s, U21s and U21s sides at the Riverside Stadium before joining National League North outfit Darlington at the age of 20.

He netted on his debut for the Quakers, and his consistent performances saw him earn an England C call up.

The all-action midfielder becomes the club's second summer signing following the arrival of Jacob Gratton from Belper Town.

Manager Nathan Haslam said: "Joe's experienced at a higher level. He probably came into us only 80% on loan in February. We had a lot of games at that time and we was brilliant in the six weeks he was with us.

"In the end, Spennymoor called him back and unfortunately for Joe he got injured not long after that.

"He's a great lad to have in the changing room and he leads on the pitch. He's another experienced player to add to what is a young squad."
