‘The three points are massive’ - Gainsborough match-winner reflects on midweek triumph
Gainsborough Trinity defender Ashley Jackson was “buzzing” at another midweek win, as Russ Wilcox’s side moved within one point of the top five.
The Holy Blues have now played as many games as Stockton Town, who occupy that final play-off spot, after deep runs in the FA Cup and FA Trophy this season created yet another backlog of games at the Kal Group Stadium.
Tuesday night saw Gainsborough travel to Whitby Town, and a 94th-minute winner from Jackson ensured all three points came back down the A64.
“It was nice to pop up with the goal, and I didn’t realise how late on it was, so that’s a bonus, too,” the 31-year-old said post-match.
“I’m more buzzing that we got the result over the line, though, to be honest, because it was close to being two points dropped again.
“Those three points are massive in our promotion push and for trying to get in those play-offs.”
The 2-1 victory marked a return to winning ways for Gainsborough, after they had to battle from two down against bottom club Workington on Saturday to salvage a point.
This Saturday, they’ll be on the search for back-to-back wins when they travel to FC United of Manchester.
A win at Broadhurst Park would put them just two points behind Mark Beesley’s side, and Jackson feels that it could be a preview of a potential play-off affair, if they managed to finish inside the top five.
“There’s pressure on us when we play teams in the bottom half, as we’re expected to win. But we’ve got some pressure on ourselves to go to FC United and close that gap too,” he continued.
“If we do get in, we might be playing them, so it’d be a good test for where we are and to see if we can get the full three points.
“It’ll be difficult, but we’re all looking forward to it.”
