South Shields pairing set for Blyth on loan

Blyth Spartans have announced that Joao Gomes and Dan Savage have both joined the squad on loan from National League North side South Shields for the upcoming season.

Both new arrivals have come through the Mariners’ academy side and featured in last season’s National League North campaign.

Additionally, the duo have spent pre-season at their parent side too, and both scored in a 2-1 win over Consett on July 30.

21-year-old Gomes made his senior debut for South Shields during their NPL winning campaign in 2022/23, making 23 appearances and scoring four goals.

The Portuguese attacker made ten appearances at step 2 last season, including a start in Shields’ 2-2 draw with Darlington in August.

Director of Football at Blyth, Steve Howard, said: “Joao is a very exciting player who will bring pace and a massive amount of quality to our side. He is highly rated at South Shields, so we’re really pleased we’ve got him.”

Dan Savage made his first team debut during last season’s campaign in a 1-1 draw against Warrington Town.

He made 11 appearances last season for the Mariners, and also spent time on loan at Hebburn Town and Boldon CA.

On signing Dan Savage, Steve Howard added: “Savage is a young attacker with plenty of appetite to succeed. He is hard working with an excellent engine and attitude.

“He will bring quality to the side and is another player who is highly rated at South Shields so I’m really pleased to get him on loan.”
