Silsden boss praises ruthless counter-attacking display to cap off six-point week

Silsden were arguably the big winners of the week in the NPL East Division, after they picked up two wins out of two on their travels, first against Bradford (Park Avenue) and then against Newton Aycliffe.

Both were completely different games, with a second-half goal securing a 1-0 win in their West Yorkshire derby at the weekend, before they put six past Newton Aycliffe on Tuesday night.

Silden boss Matt Cavanagh credited his side’s relentless attacking display on Tuesday night, after a more direct style on a “tough pitch” resulted in their third win in four games.

“For the first 15 minutes, they were all over us,” Cavanagh admitted post-match

“But we ground it out, and I thought our counter-attacking was really good. We had speed and quality on a tough pitch, so overall I’m pleased. But, there is still some room for improvement.”

Back-to-back games were the Cobbydalers’ first since January 31, and Silsden were actually level with sides in the relegation zone ahead of last weekend’s action due to their lack of fixtures.

During their time without matches, boss Cavanagh admitted that the work didn’t stop, despite postponements, and expressed his delight with how it’s translated on the field over the recent days.

“We’ve put in a lot of work over the last four weeks, as we haven’t played,” he explained.

“We’ve done a lot of fitness work, on-field training with and without the ball, and I think it’s shown in our last four performances, taking 10 points out of 12. It’s down to the lads.

“We’ve not asked for much more, but they’ve been a bit more switched on, applied themselves better, and they’re getting their joy.

“It’s important that we carry this on, keep kicking on, and that starts again on Saturday with a tough game against Heaton [Stannington].”
