Sheffield Wednesday sign Brighouse Town defender
Brighouse Town have confirmed that Sam Reed has joined Sheffield Wednesday on a permanent basis.
Reed, 20, joined the Owls on a trial period in January and has now signed his maiden professional contract with the club and will link up with their Under-21 squad.
The left-back played 39 times for Brighouse Town last year and was featured in the NPL East Team of the Season.
On his move to the Championship outfit, Town manager Vill Powell said: "Sam has been a joy to work with over the last 3 years and fully deserves the opportunity to play professionally.
"He’s got all the attributes and the mentality to go far in the game and becomes our 7th player to move onto a higher level or professionally after making their debut at Step 4 with us. We wish Sam all the best of success with Sheffield
Wednesday."
Reed's father, Stacy, is the assistant manager at Brighouse Town and is delighted that his son has achieved his dream of playing in a full-time environment.
"I’m delighted that Sam has been able to take the step
up to full-time football and I’m sure he’ll kick on from here and have a successful career.
"But none of it would have been possible without the help of Brighouse Town and giving him the chance to play and improve. I took Sam with me when he was 16 to train with the first team when I first joined as assistant manager and the difference and improvement he has made has been exceptional.
"I’d like to thank firstly Vill Powell for believing in Sam and for giving him the guidance and game time to help him improve. Secondly, the club and committee for making the place a great environment for young players to develop and finally the fans for the support of Sam as I know from speaking to them week in, week out, they have taken to him as one of their own.
"I know he will miss everyone there and I’m sure he’ll return to watch a few games in the near future."
