Scarborough must push for promotion says Thornton

Scarborough Athletic defender Will Thornton has said promotion is the club’s aim in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Thornton, who says he is loving life at Scarborough since making the move from Guiseley, says promotion is the club’s goal, with the league set to return in December.

The Flamingo Land Stadium side currently sit 11th in the Premier Division table, recording three wins, two draws and three losses ahead of the second lockdown.

“I think the main goal for us when we resume is an obvious one and it’s one that none of the lads or management shy away from. We know with the size of the club and the unbelievable fan base we have that promotion is key for us this year,” he said.

“Whether that be an automatic promotion or through the play-offs, that has to be our aim.

“We know we need to be up there at the top end of the table in and amongst it and we definitely believe we can be with this group.”

Scarborough’s last fixture came against Basford United on Tuesday 27 October, falling to a 4-1 defeat away from home.

During lockdown, Darren Kelly added striker Connor Simpson to his squad, and Thornton says the team have stayed in touch over the break.

“We’ve had regular conversation in our group chat and zoom meetings to make sure we stay in touch and connected as a group as that’s a massive thing for us,” he said.

“We have a great group of staff and players and I think with the close-knit group we have it will take us very far this season.

“Daz is big on making sure everyone keeps ticking over and fit for when we resume so as soon as we found out the news about our league being suspended we were given a fitness programme to keep up with.

“To be honest it would’ve been interesting for us to have a few challenges as we have some unbelievably fit lads in this group and I’ve no doubt everyone will come back in good shape.”
