Runcorn Linnets relieve Antony Kay of managerial duties

Runcorn Linnets have confirmed that they have parted company with first team manager Antony Kay.

The 42-year-old joined the Linnets as a player in 2023 and made 41 appearances before announcing his retirement and subsequent appointment as manager of the NPL West Division outfit in May 2024.

Since then, the former Barnsley, Tranmere Rovers, and Milton Keynes Dons defender has steered the Linnets to 12 wins in 28 matches. They are currently in 9th place, four points adrift of a playoff position.

In a statement announcing Kay's departure, a Runcorn Linnets spokesperson said: "At a meeting of the Trust Board last night, the decision was taken to relieve Antony Kay of his duties as first team manager at Runcorn Linnets.

"We would like to place on record our appreciation of Antony's professionalism since joining the club at the start of last season as a senior player and then taking on his managerial role in the summer.

"Unfortunately, Antony's hard work hasn't produced the performances and results we had hoped for. We wish him well for the future.

“The club now begins the process of finding a successor as we prepare for Saturday's visit to Newcastle Town. We will announce interim arrangements when confirmed.”

The club have also confirmed that forward Ryan Brooke and midfielder Karl Clair will take over as interim managers until the club have appointed Kay's successor.
