Rotherham midfielder makes Gainsborough loan move

Gainsborough Trinity have announced the season-long loan signing of Joel Holvey from Rotherham United.

The 18-year-old midfielder signed his first professional contract with The Millers in May after starring in their U18s setup.

He made his professional debut for the club on the last day of the Championship season, coming on in the second half of the 0-0 draw against Wigan Athletic.

Holvey joins Gainsborough Trinity for the remainder of the 2023/24 season and is excited for the challenges ahead in the Northern Premier League, saying: “It’s a really exciting opportunity, I’m looking forward to getting started with the team.”

The loan move echoes that of fellow Rotherham United Academy graduate Curtis Durose who made the move to the Lincolnshire outfit last season, becoming their joint-most capped player on 49 appearances, and their third-highest goalscorer with 14 goals.

Holvey featured in the starting line-up for Gainsborough’s 0-0 draw against Marine on the opening day of the season.
