Ramsbottom reveal experienced manager

Ramsbottom United have confirmed the appointment of Steve Wilkes as their new manager ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Wilkes comes with 25 years of coaching experience. His most recent role was at Northwich Victoria in the North West Counties League.

He led them to fifth place, but left at the end of the season. His intention was to take a break and spend more time with his family.

However, after a conversation with former Ramsbottom captain Phil Rose, he eventually agreed to take the role.

The Rams finished bottom of the NPL West Division this season, and will play in the North West Counties League next season.

He replaces Dave Chadwick as Head Coach, who was replaced following the club’s relegation.

Wilkes has also rejected reports he knew he was joining Ramsbottom when he left Northwich Victoria.

“I absolutely wasn’t looking for a new club when I told Northwich that I wanted to leave at the end of last season”, he insisted. “I looked them all square in the eyes and told them that when I told them I was resigning.

“I know they are disappointed that I have joined another club but the rumours that I was aware of this position back in February are just false. Rammy appointed Dave Chadwick in March so the stories just don’t make any sense.

“I did think that I had taken the Vics as far as I could and I really enjoyed my time there and we had a great season to finish fifth behind some big money spenders in that division like Vauxhall Motors, Avro, Bury and Wythenshawe.

“But I am very much looking forward to starting at Rammy. I have known Rosey [Phil Rose] a long time and rang me and asked if I fancied a chat, I came down, met up with Harry, another man I have known for a long time, chatted with the family and thought, ok I will take it on.”
