Player/manager role for new Ossett United signing

Ossett United have announced that new signing Ryan Qualter will also service as the club's assistant manager.

He joined Ossett earlier this week, having spent the early part of pre-season with Northern Premier League side FC United of Manchester.

The well-travelled defender will serve as assistant to Dave Wild, who he worked under during their time at Matlock Town.

In a club statement, Ossett pointed to Qualter's ability to be a "natural leader", citing his experience wearing the captain's armband at many of his previous clubs.

One of those clubs was Ossett Town, where Qualter captained the side at just 21 years of age.

The 32-year-old spent several seasons at Matlock and was part of a defence which conceded just 36 goals in 42 games during the 2021/22 season.

However, he left the club in January 2023 to join Scarborough Athletic, highlighting a change in off-field work commitments as a key factor behind the move.

Qualter spent last season at National League North side Buxton, also serving as their assistant manager under the guidance of Craig Elliott.

Ossett narrowly avoided relegation from the NPL East Division last season but have recruited well over the summer as they look to compete higher up the division this time around.

They begin their new league campaign at home to Ashington on August 10.
