NPL round-up | Saturday 4 January

Despite freezing temperatures, six games survived the elements in the Northern Premier League, with red-hot action and plenty of goals on show.

League leaders Macclesfield scored three times in the final 30 minutes to secure a 3-1 home win in their top-of-the-table clash against Worksop Town.

A first-half Liam Hughes penalty had the away side ahead, but the Silkmen showed their class in the second half to secure a 20th league win of the season.

Robbie Savage’s side remain 13 points clear atop the division, after second-placed Guiseley extended their unbeaten run to 15 games away at Workington.

Ollie Brown gave the Lions an early lead, with Will Longbottom netting his 19th league goal of the season three minutes from time to secure a third straight win.

Ilkeston Town lost a league game at home for the first time this season, as an in-form Leek Town left the New Manor Ground with a 2-0 win.

Both goals came in the first half as the Blues picked up a third win in four to move out of the relegation zone and up to 14th.

Despite Ashton United’s trip to Blyth Spartans being postponed, the Robins remain in the top five after Hebburn Town were held away at Warrington Rylands.

The Hornets had to battle from behind twice in an action-packed first half, with all the goals in the 2-2 draw coming before half-time.

Elsewhere, a Gez Sithole double was the highlight of an impressive 4-1 win for FC United of Manchester against Morpeth Town.

Mark Beesley’s side have now picked up the fifth-most points in the division over the past 10 games, with FC United climbing up to 12th.

Whitby Town moved into the top 10 with a 2-0 away win against Bamber Bridge.

A first-half brace from Nathan Thomas was enough to take all three points back to North Yorkshire.

The Seasiders have now won their last two away at home.

The other game of the weekend between Matlock Town and Prescot Cables fell victim to a frozen pitch.
