NPL round-up | Saturday 23 November

Despite poor weather conditions forcing the postponement of fixtures across the Northern Premier League, six games survived the elements in the NPL’s top division.

League leaders Macclesfield showed their quality once again as they scored six with no reply against bottom club Blyth Spartans, on their way to an 11th straight league win.

John Rooney set the tone inside a minute when he opened the scoring for the Silkmen, who were up by three after 15 minutes.

No more goals came until the 78th minute, when Robbie Savage’s side scored another three goals in a 15-minute spell.

D’Mani Mellor’s finish in second-half stoppage time confirmed his hat-trick, while Danny Elliott’s brace took him to 12 for the season.

Macclesfield extended their lead at the top of the table to 14 points, after Guiseley’s game at Matlock Town was postponed.

Third-placed Worksop Town were held at Lancaster City, as their meeting ended goalless.

The stalemate marked the Dolly Blues’ 10th draw of the campaign, as they missed out on the chance to move into sixth.

Elsewhere, Stockton Town put an end to their brief two-game losing run as a 1-0 win over FC United of Manchester saw them re-enter the top five.

Adam Nicholson’s goal on the stroke of half-time was all that separated the two sides, with Mark Beesley’s side missing the chance to climb out of the bottom four.

Elsewhere, Mickleover were also unable to escape the relegation places as they suffered their sixth straight defeat at home to Workington.

Steven Rigg netted a brace for the second week running, on the way to a 3-1 victory - only Workington’s second win away from home this season.

Jamie Walker’s strike inside seven minutes was enough to see Ilkeston Town leave the Hive Arena with all three points, as they beat Warrington Rylands 1-0.

And Matt Thornhill’s second-half goal rescued a point for Basford United at home to Prescot Cables.

The Pesky Bulls remain in 12th, but are without a league win in their last five games.
