NPL preview | Hebburn host FC United of Manchester in battle of the frontrunners
There will be no love lost in the NPL Premier Division this Valentine's Day, as sides up and down the table look to build momentum heading into the final weeks of the season.
The featured game of the weekend sees league leaders Hebburn Town take on third-placed FC United of Manchester, in a massive game that will have serious implications in the title race.
It culminates a gruelling week where Daniel Moore’s side have had to face three of the other four sides in the top five. And after draws against Warrington Rylands and Hednesford Town, they’ll be hoping to end the week unbeaten and with a win.
As for FC United, they know that a third straight win would put them level on points with the Hornets and, having played the same number of games, will insert them firmly into the title race going into their remaining fixtures.
Dropped points for Hebburn would open the door for Hednesford to reclaim top spot, but only if they better the Hornets’ result.
The Pitmen, who will be led by Kelvin Davies for the first time, travel to the Project Solar Stadium to take on a Hyde United side that have drawn all three games under the recently-appointed Michael Clegg, but haven’t tasted league victory since the first day of November.
Towards the bottom of the division, Morpeth Town will have their eyes on climbing back above Hyde and out of the drop zone after they fell in last weekend, but they’ve got a tough task ahead as they host Warrington Rylands.
Rylands avoided dropping out of the top five in midweek after Gainsborough Trinity beat Bamber Bridge. Nevertheless, Neil Reynolds knows that his side needs to keep racking up wins to keep those below them at bay.
That is especially true given that, like Rylands, the two sides immediately outside the top five also have match-ups against relegation-battlers.
First, Bamber Bridge will be looking to bounce back from midweek defeat when they travel to a Rushall Olympic side buoyed by a big win on Tuesday night at Lancaster City.
Tuesday’s victory opened up a five-point gap between the Pics and the drop, but given the tight nature of this division, that can easily be closed up again sooner rather than later.
Gainsborough, meanwhile, return home to take on basement side Workington, who have plenty to be encouraged about after picking up just their fourth win of the campaign last weekend.
Only table-toppers Hebburn have beaten Billy Barr’s side in 2026, and the Reds will be aiming to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season to trim the gap between themselves and safety even further.
Elsewhere, Warrington Town will be desperate to end their current three-game losing run and get back on track, with a home bout against Stocksbridge Park Steels next on the agenda for the Yellows.
Stocksbridge keep chipping away at the barrier between themselves and safety, but still come into this one three points behind 18th-placed Hyde.
A win could see them climb out, while Paul Carden’s Yellows will be hoping to cling on to their fading play-off hopes with a victory of their own.
Also looking to maintain their outside chance of a place in the top five are Ashton United, who travel to Whitby Town.
Steve Cunningham’s side bounced back from consecutive defeats last weekend against Warrington Town and will be seeking back-to-back victories for only the second time this season in North Yorkshire.
The Seasiders, who appointed Lee Bullock and Jason Kennedy as joint-managers earlier this week after Gary Liddle’s departure to the National League, will be wary of falling too far into the relegation scrap, which they could with defeat.
They do have games in hand on everyone, but are only four points above the drop zone currently.
Also four points above the relegation zone are Prescot Cables, and they’ll be keen to end a three-game week that has so far garnered just defeats when they welcome Cleethorpes Town to Valerie Park.
The Owls are on the hunt for back-to-back league wins for the first time since September, after a dominant win last weekend against Warrington put a healthy buffer between themselves and the drop.
That being said, Ste Daley’s side can climb above their visitors with a win.
Leek Town’s back-to-back wins in the last two weeks have calmed any immediate thoughts about being dragged into a battle down towards the wrong end of the division. In fact, Josh Brehaut’s side are looking up and will hope to make it three wins in a row at Lancaster.
A win against the Dolly Blues would halve the six-point gap that Leek have between themselves and their hosts, who have won just one of their last nine league games.
And Ilkeston Town and Guiseley, two sides going through a dip in form over the past couple of weeks, meet at the New Manor Ground.
Ian Richards’ side have failed to score in each of their last two games, while Ilkeston have just one goal and one point to show from their last three.
Both are hoping to get one back in the win column at the expense of the other.
All games are set to kick off at 3pm, unless stated otherwise.
