No excuses' for Guiseley, says boss Phillips

Guiseley manager Paul Phillips has challenged his players to raise their game after a tough start to the season.

The Lions drew 1-1 at Hyde United on the opening day of the season before falling to a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Whitby Town at Nethermoor in midweek.

They return home on Saturday to face Basford United, with both teams still searching for their first win of the new Northern Premier League season.

Speaking following Tuesday's defeat to Whitby, Phillips admitted his players were well below the levels he expected.

“The first half we were miles off it. The formation we started with probably didn’t suit what we needed to do," he told the club's official website.

“It’s a new group. We’ve probably made a similar amount of chances, but we’ve just not been clinical enough in front of goal.

“I think their keeper has got Man of the Match. He’s had four or five really good saves.

“We started the game reasonably well for 10 minutes then switched off.”

Ahead of this weekend's return to action, Phillips emphasised the importance of making themselves hard to beat in their own back yard.

“We’ll work on it Thursday. We’ve got to win games at home," he insisted.

“We’ve brought players in, there’s no excuses.

“We’ve got to be up there because of the size of this club, and we will be.”
