Newcastle Town manager to leave club

Newcastle Town have announced that both first team manager Robin van der Laan and his assistant Paul Groves will step down at the end of the season.

The pair have been in charge of the men’s first team for six seasons. Prior to that, Van der Laan held a director’s role at the club, which he will return to once his spell in charge has finished.

During their time in charge, they have also seen a couple of players move up the ranks and land professional contracts.

Ryan McClean signed for National League North side Hereford in 2021, and James Melhado plays in the EFL for League Two side Salford City.

In a statement, the club praised Van der Laan for the work he did in developing the Education Academy, ensuring the club had a steady stream of young players coming through.

They said: “We would like to place on record our sincere thanks for the hard work, commitment and contribution to the club Robin has played over the past six years, steering the club through some of its biggest changes in its short history.

“We would also like to place on record our sincere thanks to assistant manager Paul Groves and the rest of Robin’s coaching staff for their contribution during the past six seasons.”

The club also say an announcement will be made in due course in terms of who will replace them.
