New Hyde man Thompson settling in well following FA Cup double-header
Hyde United were victorious in their FA Cup first qualifying round replay over FC United of Manchester, with Jake Thompson netting the only goal of the game.
Hyde were pegged back in the first qualifying round after leading 3-0 with 12 minutes to go at Broadhurst Park, but were able to hold on to the lead in the replay.
The 25-year-old has settled in quickly at his new home following his move from National League North side Radcliffe, scoring in both games against the Rebels.
On signing for his new club, Thompson said: “I made it clear to Radcliffe that I wanted to play more football and I’ve known Nicky Spooner for a long time. The minute he called, I decided I wanted to play here.
“It feels good to contribute with a few goals so far and help the team however I can.”
Thompson was part of the Radcliffe side who won the Northern Premier League last season. He made 27 appearances last campaign, scoring two goals.
Overall, in the two seasons he spent at the Neuven Stadium, he made 68 appearances, and scored 13 times.
Thompson provides plenty of experience to a young Hyde side, and when asked about what it takes to win the NPL, he said: “You’ve got to grind out results like we did today [vs FC United].
“It won’t be pretty at times but you’ve got to find a way to win and that’s what good sides do.
“If we do what we do on the pitch and the fans do what they do outside of it then it’ll take a decent team to stop us.”
Hyde’s victory in the replay earned the current NPL leaders a trip to National League North side Southport on September 14.
However, they have two league games before then, starting at Nevermoor when they take on Guiseley on September 7, where Thompson will be available to make his league debut.
