Matlock sign ex-Barnsley defender

Matlock Town have strengthened their backline with the arrival of former Barnsley centre-back Danny Benson.

The commanding 20-year-old defender progressed through the ranks at Oakwell, having joined the Reds’ youth setup in October 2017.

He made his senior debut in their Papa John’s Trophy outing against Lincoln City in August 2022.

Benson has also enjoyed a taste of non-league football, joining Bradford Park Avenue on loan during the 2022/23 season and then again in 2023/24.

He joins a Matlock side currently sat at the foot of the Northern Premier League table after picking up two draws and four defeats from their opening six games.

The Gladiators are in FA Cup first qualifying round action away at Spalding United, champions of the NPL Midlands Division last term before their lateral move to the Southern League.
