Matlock bring in Chesterfield defender

Young Chesterfield defender George Wilkinson has joined Matlock Town on loan, the club have announced.

Wilkinson, 19, has played as a trialist in recent Gladiators friendlies against Buxton, Mansfield Town and Belper Town.

He first joined Chesterfield at U9s level and progressed through their youth ranks before joining Staveley Miners Welfare to boost his experience within men's football.

Following his return to the National League side, the teenager made his Spireites first team debut last season against Coalville Town in the FA Trophy, scoring their only goal in a 3-1 defeat.

He subsequently went on loan to Coalville and played a key role in their ultimately-unsuccessful push for the Southern League title.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have secured George," manager Martin Carruthers said.

"He did really well at Coalville last season and they were really keen to sign him for this season, so it’s a real coup for us to get him.

"He’s a really talented young player and we’re looking forward to working with him this season.”
