Maddison makes NPL move

Spalding United have pulled off a coup with the signing of midfielder Marcus Maddison.

Maddison, 27, joined Bolton Wanderers on loan in February and made 10 appearances, before deciding to step away from full-time football.

A former Newcastle United youth player, Maddison made his name at Peterborough United, where he scored 52 goals in 212 league appearances, and played alongside current Spalding manager Gabriel Zakuani.

He said: “When Gaby reached out and offered me the opportunity to get involved with what he’s trying to build at Spalding, I felt like it was something I wanted to be part of. I look forward to getting fit and showing the gaffer what I can do.”

Maddison has also played for Gateshead, Hull City and Charlton Athletic, while he had a brief loan spell in the Northern Premier League with Blyth Spartans back in 2012/13.

Zakuani added: “I’m very pleased to get a player of this quality. I know Marcus personally, and I think at this arrangement suits both parties.”

Spalding will play in the new NPL Midlands Division when the season kicks off in August.
