Ilkeston Town sign Tanzania international
Tanzanian attacking midfielder Ben Starkie has joined Ilkeston Town.
The 21-year-old made his debut as a late substitute in their 4-0 win at Lancaster City last Saturday, with his arrival confirmed in the hours before kick-off.
Earlier this month, Starkie helped his country qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for just the third time in their history.
He was an unused substitute in the Taifa Stars' goaless draw against an Algeria side which featured the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Said Benrahma and Rayan Aït-Nouri.
Starkie made his international debut in a 3-1 friendly win over the Central African Republic in March 2022.
At domestic level, the talented midfielder has previously featured for Rugby Town, SV Wilhelmshaven in Germany, Shepshed Dynamo, Spalding United and Basford United.
Ilkeston manager Ian Deakin said: “Ben is a player I’ve admired for a few years.
“I first identified him whilst playing for Spalding, where I’d have liked to have brought him into my former club.
“I’m delighted I’ve got him to sign for one of my teams. He’ll give us real quality.
“Ben can play multiple positions in terms of midfield. He’s a dynamic player with a bit of flair, but also does the other side of the game in getting back and making tackles.
“He’s a real talent and we’re delighted to have that kind of calibre and quality come into the football club.”
