Hyde United midfielder joins Southport

Hyde United midfielder Callum Spooner has departed the club to take up an opportunity at National League North side Southport.

Spooner, 26, joined the Tigers in March 2022 from Bamber Bridge, where he linked up with his father and head coach, Nicky Spooner.

Since then, the former Bolton youngster has made 103 appearances for the Tameside outfit.

Now, Spooner departs the club to challenge himself further up the football pyramid with Southport.

On the move to the Sandgrounders, Spooner said: "I spent a good couple of years [at Hyde United] and I thought that it was time to move on and push myself at this level.

"I loved working with my dad at Hyde, it was probably the reason why I stayed at the club for a little bit longer to help him out.

"He developed me as a player like he has done ever since I was a kid.

"He's one of the main influences on my career. I spent time with him at Bolton and then Hyde, and he's been encouraging me to move on and I thought that it was time to move on too.

"I'm really excited to be at Southport. There was some interest in me over the last year or two, but I wanted to stick it out at Hyde a little bit.

"This summer, I knew that I was going to leave because I was attracting a lot of interest from this league and I believe that I've chosen the right place."
