Former Wolves full-back joins Gainsborough

Gainsborough Trinity have announced the signing of Aaron Simpson ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The 27-year-old right-back began his career at Maidstone United, before securing a two-year deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

During his time at Wolves, he enjoyed loan spells at Portsmouth, AFC Telford, Kilmarnock and Spanish side FC Jumilla.

Following his release from the Premier League club in March 2019, Simspon joined League of Ireland Premier Division outfit Waterford FC, before returning home to link up with Dover Athletic in July.

A year later, the defender made the move to Sutton United, where he made 12 appearances as they gained promotion to the Football League.

During his time at The U's, Simpson appeared as a contestant on the reality TV show Love Island.

Following this, he returned to footballing duties and enjoyed spells at Hemel Hempstead Town, Chippenham, and most recently, Salisbury, where he helped them to secure promotion to Step 3.

Simpson has been an ever-present figure in Gainsborough Trinity's pre-season schedule and has impressed Holy Blues fans with his performances so far.

On his move to the Lincolnshire side, he said: "I've really enjoyed pre-season so far.

"I feel like I have settled in really well and the lads have been really welcoming.

Having played at this level last year and looking at the squad, I think it will be a really exciting season."

Manager Russ Wilcox is delighted to secure the signature of Simpson and believes he will be a big boost to their chances of promotion in 2024/25.

"It's great to finally get this deal over the line. A big thanks to Dave Horsley and the board for their support," Wilcox said.

"Aaron will be an excellent addition to the squad. He’s settled in really well with the group.

"He’s got good experience at this level, after getting promoted last season with Salisbury FC.

"He adds quality, experience and what’s required to be successful. I’m delighted he’s on board."
