Former AFCON Winner and Celtic star Efe Ambrose joins Workington

Workington have announced the stunning capture of former Celtic defender Efe Ambrose.

Ambrose joins Mark Fell's side following his departure from NWCFL side Bury FC.

He arrives with an esteemed pedigree, having made over 100 appearances for Celtic and featuring 51 times for the Nigeria national team, including a trophy-winning campaign in the African Cup of Nations in 2013.

The 35-year-old was also in the starting XI for Celtic when they famously defeated Barcelona at Celtic Park in the 2012/13 Champions League - a season which saw the Bhoys reach the Round of 16.

Since his departure from the 54-time Scottish league champions, Ambrose remained in the country and has featured for the likes of Hibernian, Livingstone, St Johnstone and Queen of the South.

He made his first appearance in England this season after signing for Bury in the summer. In total he played six times for the Shakers, scoring once in a 7-1 win at Abbey Hey.

His departure from the club was confirmed over the weekend, with lengthy travel times cited as a primary reason for his departure.

His move further north to Workington was confirmed before their Bank Holiday win over Hebburn Town.

Ambrose won’t be able to make his debut for his new side until September 7 at the earliest, given he has already appeared in the FA Cup for Bury, which the Reds enter on Saturday against Hebburn.
