FC United announce captaincy plans after Michael Ennis departure
Long-serving midfielder Michael Donohue has been unveiled as FC United of Manchester's new captain.
He takes the armband from Charlie Ennis, whose exit from Broadhurst Park after seven years was confirmed earlier this month.
Donohue joined the club in September 2018 as a 21-year-old, making his debut in a 2-2 draw against Bradford (Park Avenue). His first goal followed later that month in a 2-0 FA Cup victory over Colne.
Since then, the midfielder has gone on to make 232 appearances for FC United over the past eight years, placing him sixth on the club’s all-time appearance list.
He has worn the captain's armband twice before - against Radcliffe in the Manchester Premier Cup in 2019, and most recently against Prescot Cables back in February.
“To be made club captain is a massive honour and something I’m immensely proud to have been asked to do," Donohue said.
“I’ve spent the majority of my career at this club, and I can’t thank the club and the fans enough for the support they’ve given me, on and off the pitch.
“I’ll do my utmost to help get the club to where it belongs and repay the belief you’ve all put in me.”
Donohue is just 18 appearances short of reaching 250 appearances for FC United - a feat achieved by just four players before him, including the man he has taken the armband from.
“I’m delighted that Donners has agreed to take on the role of club captain," manager Mark Beesley added.
“He’s been at FC United a long time. He knows the club, he understands what it means to our supporters and he understands the relationship between the players and the people on the terraces.
“He leads by example, on the pitch and in the dressing room, and he’s exactly the sort of person I want representing this team.”
