FA Cup round-up | Hednesford advance, Stockton fall short and penalty heartbreak for Worksop
Three Northern Premier League sides were in FA Cup third qualifying round replay action on Tuesday night, with Hednesford Town the only side to advance to the next stage of the competition.
The Step 4 Pitmen overcame Midland Football League Premier Division side Shifnal Town 1-0, with Dan Trickett-Smith scoring the only goal of the game midway through the second half.
Hednesford have earned themselves another tie at Keys Park in the next round, this time against National League heavyweights Gateshead.
FA Trophy winners last season, Gateshead currently sit fifth in the National League but are currently on the search for a new manager following the departure of Rob Elliot to League One side Crawley Town.
Elsewhere on Tuesday night, Worksop Town were defeated on penalties by National League North side King's Lynn Town.
The tie finished goalless after 120 minutes of play, and it was the Linnets who prevailed 4-3 in the shootout.
Free-scoring Worksop played the entirety of extra-time with a man advantage following Ross Crane's sending-off for two bookable offences but were unable to continue their recent form in the FA Cup.
The other NPL side in action were Stockton Town, who put in a brave display but fell to a 1-0 defeat at Chester.
The Step 3 Anchors enjoyed a dream start as Seals defender Connell Rawlinson was sent off inside three minutes.
However, it was Chester who scored the only goal of the game 20 minutes from time, Harrison Burke heading home the winner.
FA Cup results involving Northern Premier League sides:
- Chester 1-0 Stockton Town
- Hednesford Town Town 1-0 Shifnal Town
- King's Lynn Town 0-0 Worksop Town (4-3 pens)
