‘Be a part of it’ - Rallying cry delivered to AFC Rushden & Diamonds fans as fourth straight win boosts play-off hopes
AFC Rushden & Diamonds moved three points off the play-offs in the NPL Midlands Division on Tuesday night after a fourth straight win against Coventry Sphinx.
The relegation-threatened side did take the lead at the Hayden Road Sports Ground, but a wonder strike from Jordan O'Brien just before half-time turned the tide, and a Tyler Winters winner capped off an improved second half for the hosts.
Manager Elliot Sandy admitted post-match that his side weren’t as sharp as he would have wanted but credited the fightback, especially in the second half, to continue their winning run.
“I’m pleased with the result, it was an ugly win,” he admitted.
“We were flat, and Coventry were good all night. It was a real battle, and it shows the character of our lads, when you’re not at it, to still find a win.
“We’re three points off the play-offs now with a couple of games in hand. We’re right in the mix, and that’s where we want to be.”
Tuesday’s win was also Diamonds’ first home game since January 20, due to numerous postponements and abandonments. They played five away games on the bounce before the latest midweek outing, and now stare at a run of four games in five at home.
In the midst of a top-five charge, those home games are exactly what Diamonds need.
And ahead of a match-up against Boldmere St Michaels, who share top spot with Rushden & Diamonds in the form guide over the last 10 games, Diamonds boss Sandy has stressed that their supporters will play a big part in the coming weeks.
“Boldmere are top of the form guide and have a really strong team. I urge the fans to come out and support us again to help us get over the line,” he said.
“We’re pushing for the play-offs now, so come and be a part of it. We might not get there, but we’ll give it everything.
“We’ve always had that belief, and the fans are slowly starting to believe as well. We just need you to come out more this Saturday.
“We’re delighted to be back at home, but we want you here cheering us on, because that helps us get more positive results.”
