Atherton Collieries sign talented defender

Atherton Collieries have signed former Ramsbottom United defender Josh Askew.

Askew first played in the Northern Premier League as a teenager for Warrington Town, on loan from Blackburn Rovers.

He played a key role at Salford City as they won the National League North, and has since amassed more National League experience with Alfreton Town, Chester, Boston United, Curzon Ashton and Stockport County.

Askew subsequently dropped down to the Northern Premier League, playing for FC United of Manchester, Hyde United and Stalybridge Celtic.

He finished the 2022/23 season at Ramsbottom United, having returned to the club back in February.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to be signing for Atherton Colls, and excited to be working under Chaddy [manager David Chadwick] again as I know how good of a manager he is," Askew said.

“I’m excited to to be playing in front of the fans, as I know it’s a real good relationship between the players and fans.

"Hopefully I can excite them when I play. I’m bringing a lot of experience and leadership for a 25-year-old who’s won promotions in the leagues above, and I’m hoping we bring the same success here at Atherton."

Colls boss David Chadwick said: “It’s crazy to think that with all Josh’s experience and length of time playing at high levels, he is still only 25.

"He has so much to give, and if we get the best Josh Askew we’re getting a great player."
