Matlock appoint Nicky Law as new manager

Matlock Town have announced that Nicky Law will take up the reins as their new manager.

The Gladiators have been led by interim managers Adam Yates and Mark Atkins since March when Martin Carruthers stepped down from the managerial role.

Law, 61, joins the club from Burnley, where he was working as the head of youth recruitment.

An Arsenal Academy player, he made over 500 appearances in the Football League at the likes of Barnsley, Blackpool, Rotherham United and Chesterfield over the course of a 16-year career which spanned from 1981-1997.

Law's managerial career began in 2000 when he took over the reins at Chesterfield, guiding the Spirerites to promotion into the then-Division Two.

He then went on to manage in the First Division with Bradford City but was dismissed in November 2003 and was subsequently appointed the manager of Grimsby Town.

Law joined Buxton shortly after and helped the Bucks to win the Northern Counties East League title in the 2005/06 season, and the Northern Premier League First Division title a year later.

In 2007, he made the move to Alfreton Town, leading them to the Football Conference in 2010/11.

After seven years at Burnley, Law returns to management and will be aiming to improve on the Gladiator's 15th-place finish in the league last season.

“I’m delighted to be manager of a well-established club in Matlock, I find the community aspect and the close link with the fans very refreshing and it really impressed me," Law said.

“I firstly need to speak with the lads already here but we need to improve on last year and try to build as squad that will compete at a better level.

"In the medium to long term, we need to develop a squad that is younger and is sustainable for the club but that can be up there challenging for honours.

"People talk about styles of play but the main objective has to be to win games of football, the more you win the better off you are.

"I’ll be looking for the players to always give one hundred per cent, honesty is a big thing for me, people come and spend their hard-earned cash and expect to see one hundred per cent effort from the players as a bare minimum.

"For now I’ll be looking at what we’ve got, who stays and who goes, part of management is making tough decisions."

Law will announce his supporting team within the next few weeks.

Acting Chairman Martin Harrison added: “We’re pleased and excited to name Nicky as our new manager, his motivation to succeed in management again, his experience and understanding of what it’ll take to rebuild the team were all key factors in our decision to select Nicky.”
