Steven Daley “quite optimistic” about Prescot Cables in relegation battle after draw with Cleethorpes
Prescot Cables manager Steven Daley stressed the importance of remaining competitive and showing good spirit after his side were pegged back late against Cleethorpes Town on Tuesday night.
A couple of second-half goals turned the contest on its head after Cleethorpes had gone in one-up, but Josh Walker’s effort eight minutes from time ensured that the points were shared.
It’s a third consecutive draw for Cables, and despite it extending a winless run to eight league games, Daley was happier with his team’s ability to compete with a top side.
“It felt like a cup final towards the end because we felt like we needed to win. We were open at the time, but until they got their goal, I felt that we were good value for the win,” he told Off the Park post-match.
“I thought we looked more dangerous, and we’re a little disappointed that we didn’t hang on for all three points.
“This bunch of lads will give you everything, and you could see the passion tonight. If we show that spirit, we’ll be all right.”
Prescot are now two points above the drop zone heading into their final six games of the campaign.
Teams around them have games in hand, but the fight shown by Daley’s side gives the manager slight confidence that they’ll pick up more points between now and the end of April.
“There’s no give-up in these players, that’s non-negotiable,” he continued. “The lads have shown real good character, real good spirit.
“That’s three we haven’t lost. I know we haven’t won in a bit, but we’ve got to stay competitive, and we will do. We’ve come up against another good team tonight.
“We’ve just got to keep staying competitive, and I’m quite optimistic that we will be fine.”
Next up is a trip to league leaders Hebburn Town in what will be a tough outing, where any points would be massive in Cables’ bid for survival.
