Luke Potter named Basford United manager following Carruthers resignation
Luke Potter has been unveiled as the new Basford United manager - hours after the club accepted the resignation of Martin Carruthers.
Carruthers returned to the club for a second spell back in March, but spent time during the early part of the season on compassionate leave due to a family bereavement.
Following discussions with Carruthers' backroom team, Potter returned as head coach on a short-term basis.
He previously served as assistant to Steve Kittrick between 2022-24.
Carruthers tendered his resignation on Sunday night, and although it was initially rejected by owner Chris Munroe, the decision to formalise his departure was confirmed on Boxing Day.
Saul Deeney will serve as Potter's assistant, with the Lions returning to action against Worksop Town on Saturday.
“Following on from the sad departure news regarding Martin, that I totally respect, I send Martin and his family our clubs sincere regards and appreciation for what he has brought to Basford United over two spells," Munroe said.
"I am sure Martin will not be a stranger at Greenwich Avenue, but we and I totally respect his wish to step aside.
"I am delighted to offer Luke Potter, supported by Saul Deeney, the position of first team manager and assistant.
"Both have all the attributes to take us into the next phase of Basford United, and I hope to be talking about 2025/26 as soon as feasible.
"With Saul likely to continue playing, then Luke will assess what he needs and wants as support in the dugout. I personally ask our fanbase to rally round Luke and Saul and all our players, as we embark on a run of big games over the coming weeks."
Basford currently find themselves in the Northern Premier League relegation zone.
They also remain in the FA Trophy and host National League Eastleigh in the fourth round on January 4.
