“It’s all about results” - Russ Wilcox credits Gainsborough effort in Hyde United “pressure game”

Gainsborough Trinity boss Russ Wilcox acknowledges the importance of getting results over the line at this point in the season, as the Holy Blues returned to the top five with a 2-0 win over Hyde United.

The Tuesday night clash at the Kal Group Stadium had massive implications on both the play-off chase and the race to avoid relegation.

As it stands, only goal difference separates Hyde from a place in the drop zone, while the Holy Blues moved back above Stockton Town into the final play-off place.

“It’s a great result,” Wilcox said after the game. “We’re at the end of the season now, where it’s all about results. It was a pressure game.

“For me, Hyde will win games of football, and I’ll be very surprised if they go down. They’re a good outfit, with a good manager, good staff and good players.

“They were probably better than us box-to-box, but the game is won in both boxes, and we were better there.”

While a clinical edge going forward and a penalty save from Gainsborough keeper David Robson at 1-0 helped the Holy Blues to three points, Wilcox credited the hard work his side put in alongside it.

“The game was won tonight with the work we put in off the ball,” he continued.

“We know the quality that we have with it, but every man tonight went on the pitch and gave everything for the shirt. It’s what the fans want to see, and I’m delighted to see it, too.”

And Russ Wilcox knows that his side needs to put more performances like that in to ensure they remain in the top five. With eight games left, it’s in their hands.

They take on Rushall Olympic on Saturday, before returning home for two big games against Bamber Bridge and fellow play-off side, Warrington Rylands.

“Rushall will be a challenge, and the two home games after are six-pointers. But let’s enjoy tonight, because you have to enjoy every win, and then we’ll focus first on Rushall.”
